COUNCILLORS in Bewdley are calling for a footbridge across the River Severn to imp-rove pedestrian safety.
The need for better pedestrian access from Wribben-hall to Load Street has been discussed for many years and Bewdley Mayor, Liz Davies, said it could be dangerous for people walking across Bewdley Bridge.
She added: "Over the last two or three weeks, especially with one side of the footpath closed, it has been clear how dangerous it is for pedestrians to get from one side of the river to the other.
"I thought I was going to be squashed the other day in a car so I don't know how mothers with pushchairs feel when they are walking across the bridge."
Mrs Davies continued: "This need has been around for many years. There were many discussions more than 12 years ago.
"I have floated the idea back into people's consciousness and I thought it was very important that we started to visit the issue again.
"It is going to take a long time, by the time you have a plan and funding.
"Hopefully, we are making the first steps towards a plan for the future for safe pedestrian access across the river."
The town council has contacted various organisations in the town, including the Civic Society, Severn Valley Railway and Chamber of Trade to get their views on the issue and will discuss it further at its next meeting on Monday, March 27.
