SIR Michael Spicer, the Conservative MP who has represented Malvern for over 30 years, will not be standing at the next General Election.

However, he says he will work harder than ever for his West Worcestershire constituents until then.

"The next election could be over four years away," he said this week. "It's up to Blair, or - who knows - Brown. If it's three years away, then I'll be 66 and that's a good time to bow out.

"I also wanted to give my constituency association plenty of time to find a suitable candidate.

"Until then, I fully intend to serve my constituents with as much vigour and relish as I ever have, if not more."

Sir Michael said he hopes to see Malvern get a new community hospital before he leaves office.

He is one of the panellists at a public meeting about the hospital and health services at the Malvern Theatres tonight (Friday), at 7pm.

Tomorrow, he will carry out two of his regular constituency surgeries, at Upton's Memorial Hall at 10am and the Conservative office, 215 Worcester Road, Malvern Link, at 10.45am.

Sir Michael was first elected as MP for what was then South Worcestershire in February 1974.

In government, he has served as minister for aviation, for electricity and coal, and for housing.

He has also been a deputy chairman of the party and currently chairs the influential 1922 Committee, which plays a vital role in the selection of new leaders.

Sir Michael made the retirement announcement at the last meeting of the West Worcestershire Conservative Association.
