SIR - I have noted your comments in the Worcester News urging us council employees to use alternative forms of transport. While I would be the first to admit that something needs to be done about the situation I must stress that leaving cars at home would be very impractical if not impossible for most staff as things stand now.

I am unhappy with your implication that an employee might selfishly take a householder's space in order to park their car. Most of the houses around County Hall have their own driveways which I (like most other employees) would not dream of blocking and the householders have no legal right to park on the road in front of their homes or to prevent us from doing so.

The cycle facilities at County Hall are barely adequate for the number of staff who already use them. They could not cope with increased demand unless they were expanded considerably.

A number of footpaths and cycle routes around County Hall are isolated and/or unlit making them unsafe especially during the winter months. Most people do not feel safe cycling on London Road and there have been cases of staff being knocked off bikes there.

Travelling to work on the bus is an unpleasant experience due to disorderly Sixth Form college students. Few passengers will offer their seat to a 30-year-old but I cannot stand on moving buses due to a back injury.

How about using your position to push for these barriers to be overcome rather than pushing for us to use inconvenient and potentially unsafe forms of transport?

SALLY METCALFE,

Worcester
