BOXER Dave Jenvey continued his excellent campaign by winning the Midland Counties Novice title last Friday.

The 21-year-old fighter, a member of Droitwich Amateur Boxing Club (DABC), defeated Mansfield puncher Courntey Owen in Hinckley in the less than 20 fights category.

Victory also qualified Jenvey for the quarterfinals of the national championships on May 13.

Jenvey used fast boxing to win the first round but his opponent increased his work rate in the second round. Despite his opponent making it hard work Jenvey showed resilience to win the second round.

However, his opponent came out all guns blazing in the third round and took a point lead into the deciding fourth round.

But the DABC fighter produced a dazzling display of power to win the fight by two points.

Coach Chris Andrews said: "I am so pleased for Dave, who has worked desperately hard for this title.

"He is a real grafter with the heart of a lion and deserves all the success he can get. He is now into the last eight in the country and boxes in the national quarter finals."

Welterweight Michael Pardoe, 19, defeated Dudley's Martin Gordon and light welterweight Nick Lemare out pointed David Bennett, while Brett Fidoe defeated Liam O'Flaherty on points.
