SIR - Sadly, Worcester's lack-lustre lottery application for the riverside was refused, as I expected. It was just a pointless grandiose idea. Why would a landlocked city want a river lighthouse?
There should now be a period of reflection and public consultation about the future appearance of our city. The failed designs should not be forced upon us unless a majority of citizens still want them.
Alternatively, I suggest an illuminated tower on top of Whittington Tump. The tree on the mound can be seen from every road approaching Worcester, so a tower would be a real city landmark and a fitting memorial for those reputed to be buried in the Tump. Financing for such a project should be easily obtained if the tower also incorporated a revolving restaurant.
