A LEAFLET produced by Malvern Hills District Council has upset Tenbury traders. It claims that the town's Round Market is "confined to a weekly plant market and occasional other uses".

But Chris Dell, press officer for the market, hit back, saying: "The market actually trades twice a week, on Tuesday and Friday mornings, and has the sort of stalls you expect to see at a market - not just plants.

"It also has an auction, currently held at 10am on Tuesdays, where members of the public can sell almost anything. It is staggering that they could get it so wrong."

Owen Ball, the market rights holder, asked: "What is the point of giving out a leaflet with wrong information? It's worse than useless. It has obviously been written by someone who doesn't know anything about the market as there is no mention of the auction.

"Only one regular stall sells plants and we have a number of stalls selling a variety of items. To suggest that the market only sells plants is seriously misleading and could discourage people from visiting."

He added: "It is a shame to pay money and have something printed like that. If they had consulted somebody from Tenbury it would not have happened."

However, officers from the council claimed the problem could be "easily rectified" and that tourism was due to receive a boost by the production of Tenbury's most comprehensive visitors' guide ever.

Anthony Collis, town centre co-ordinator for Tenbury, said: "This leaflet is over a year old and it was only a small run. Any correction can be easily rectified when we re-print it. We do these things as professionally as we can and we are grateful for people pointing this out."

He explained that the leaflet was not intended as an "advertising medium" but to make people aware of what was available in Tenbury.

"We have just produced a new visitors' guide that is 28 pages long and is the most comprehensive I have ever seen for any town of comparable size. I hope people give it the credit it deserves," he added. "This has up-to-date information and is available free of charge from the new Tourist Information Centre."

Tenbury's new tourism co-ordinator, Malcolm Salisbury, added that the district council "has released a new visitors' guide which gives general information on the town and a general outline about what people can do. There is also a separate event guide coming out shortly".

The district council recently opened a tourist information centre in Teme Street to provide a one-stop-shop for information.

Preparations are also underway for the second Tenbury Walking Weekend, organised by the council, which will be held between May 13 and 14.
