WITH today's launch of Foster Care Fortnight, it has been announced that more carers are urgently needed in Worcestershire.

In support of the recruitment campaign, social workers and foster carers are taking part in information sessions across the county.

There are currently 39 fostering households in Worcester, but 25 new approved carers are needed in the county, with six of these required in the city.

Worcester County Council wants to recruit people from different ethnic, cultural and religious backgrounds, to help care for the diverse range children in the area.

They can be single or married, straight or gay, employed or unemployed. The service's marketing and communications officer, Geraldine Clegg, said: "Fostering is hard work, but very rewarding.

"Foster carers have a vital role to play in fostering brighter futures, giving them the best possible start in life.

"Anyone can apply to become a foster carer, and there are many different ways to get involved - it's even possible to foster on a part-time basis.

"I would encourage anyone who is interested in fostering and has the patience and understanding to become a foster carer to contact us. We offer a comprehensive training and support package."

Anyone interested in fostering can visit The Whitehouse Hotel, in The Foregate, Worcester city centre, on Wednesday, May 24 between 7pm and 9pm, where there will be an opportunity for the public to learn more about fostering and the process of becoming a carer.

They will be able to talk to members of the fostering team and hear about the experiences of existing carers.

They can also find out more information by calling 0800 028 2158, or logging on to the website at www.worcestershire. gov.uk/adoption&fostering or www.worcestershire.gov.uk/adoption&fostering
