A TRY by James Upton and three penalties by Gareth Thomas ensured that Bromsgrove RFC under-19s ended the season by winning the North Midlands Plate on Saturday.

The young Boars had to produce a stubborn display in the second half to see off Luctonians and winning a close match 14-12.

Bromsgrove had streaked into a 14-5 lead but Luctonians made sure of a tense final by grabbing a try in the second half.

The Boars were involved in a titanic battle to win the plate. In an intense match Bromsgrove used 21 players to fend off determined Luctonians. Dan Spalding, Robin Crawford, Mark Bell-Humphreys, Sam Lofthouse all suffered injuries, while helping Bromsgrove win the Plate.

Thomas's accurate boot made sure that Bromsgrove took the lead in the first half when he scored three penalties.

Luctonians' pressure finally told then they grabbed a try back but Stuart Young set up Upton for a try.

In the second half Luctonians tries to take advantage of wind blowing their way but strong tackling by Lofthouse and Bell-Humphrey kept them at bay for much of the half. Good work at lineout by Russell Ingram and Roberto Casamassa also allowed Bromsgrove to drive forward. But the game became even more tense Luctonians scored a try underneath the posts with eight minutes left. Camped in their own half Bromsgrove battled on bravely and Luctonians missed a chance to win the match when a late penalty attempt was missed.
