THE death of the newborn baby girl found on a pathway in Great Alne is being treated as an unlawful killing.

Baby ''Lily'', as police have named her, was discovered inside a white plastic bag by a family walking along a path by the River Alne off Wood Lane almost two weeks ago.

Warwickshire police yesterday released some vital clues they hope will encourage the public to help them solve the mysterious death.

Police said tests on the baby's body revealed she had suffered a number of injuries not consistent with a difficult birth, including a fractured skull and collarbone. She still had her umbilical cord and was not cared for, fed or wearing a nappy.

Police also found four blood stained tea towels, a pair of pyjama bottoms and a pair of size 12 knickers. The pyjamas were part of a two-item set sold by BHS in their 2002 Christmas range and were size 12-14.

DCI Adrian Pearson (pictured) said the items were not wrapped around the baby's body but were abandoned in the bag with her. He said they could have been left as a cry for help from the mother and were "significant" clues.

Shards of plastic electric flex were found close to the body along with a woman's belly button ring featuring a turquoise stone.

However, while police do not believe the mother gave birth near the river, they think the place could have been significant to her or the person who left the baby there. It is believed the mother, or that person, may be local.

DCI Pearson said: "It's not a place you go through, it's a place you go to."

Police are anxious to speak to anyone who may have been in the area at the time, regardless if they saw the bag or not.

DCI Pearson appealed for anyone to come forward who may be suspicious about a woman who was pregnant but said she had lost the baby.

He also renewed an appeal for the mother of the baby to come forward and said she would be treated fairly.

He said the police had received numerous phone calls and had spoken to more than 300 motorists in the last few weeks but had not come up with any leads.
