I WAS interested to read the letter from Michael Bligh concerning the unsolicited letter from Jacqui Smith, as well as the letter from Albert Wharrad concerning the ills of the Labour Party (Advertiser, May 17).

In both cases, I find that again the actions taken both at a Government level and local level exemplify why so many people felt they could not support Labour and opted for what I can only see as a protest vote in electing the British National Party candidate in Winyates ward.

In the case of Ms Smith, she has again sent out unsolicited mail using House of Commons notepaper in writing to constituents about a problem that has actually been caused by her colleagues in Cabinet.

I agree wholeheartedly with the comments made by Mr Bligh and it shows the utter disregard Ms Smith has for the rules that apply regarding correspondence sent out by her as an MP.

Once again, all taxpayers will pay the postage for sending out these letters when if she really wanted to do something positive about the Alexandra Hospital problem, she can talk to Tony Blair every Thursday morning in Cabinet.

So hooray, all of Redditch's problems will soon be over.

In respect to Mr Wharrad, I tried to speak to him when he was canvassing in our road with his six or seven assistants.

When I was speaking to an assistant and explaining to him the reasons why I wouldn't personally vote Labour (the lies, deceit and general spin) he avoided me like the plague.

It is because this Government and its leaders have continually failed to listen to the people who originally elected them.

People in Winyates obviously felt the same and saw in the BNP an alternative regarding issues that concern them daily - immigration, the failure of law and order and the incompetence of not deporting illegal immigrants who come here, abuse the goodwill of the country and then go out and commit crimes, all at the expense of the rest of us who pay our taxes.

Let's hope the BNP can stir up the malaise that now occurs in this town.
