I READ recently Albert Wharrad had served 40 years representing Winyates ward. Most commendable.

But life and times move on and eventually someone would have to take his place.

That place has now been taken by David Enderby, representing the British National Party.

The campaign he ran did not personify the media perception of the BNP - ''Fascist Hooligans''. Far from it.

Furthermore, he served in one of this country's most respected regiments and they do not tolerate fascism or holliganism.

Quite the opposite, selecting very carefully who joins its ranks, looking for team players with special mental, physical and professional skills.

As a civilian, Mr Enderby is free to follow the political path of his choice and this he has done.

Through his representation, the BNP may see a different light at the end of their tunnel, retaining similar ideals while curbing the bad elements among supporters.

Yes, some of their ideals are very right wing. It does not alter the fact a proportion of the electorate in this country feel very let down of late.

Mr Enderby only has a foot on the first rung of the political ladder, local politics, hardly the platform for expounding doom.

Who knows, he may well prove to be a breath of fresh air and I wish him well.
