A MOTORCYCLING duo from Redditch are revving up to raise cash for an animal rescue charity.

Allan Williams, 25, and Barry Drew, 34, plan to ride to John O'Groats and then down to Land's End , starting from Beoley on Thursday, June 1, and getting back in four days.

All funds will go to an appeal launched following the successful rescue of a pony called Jasper.

The yearling colt was rescued by SPEAR (Sue Pike Equine and Animal Rescue) based near Warwick.

He had been treated appallingly, was emaciated and close to death.

But after years of veterinary care he has been nursed back to full health and is now a top-class show pony, winning shows across the country.

As a thank you to the charity, the Jasper of SPEAR Fund was set up to raise money to help horses and ponies which are in the same position.

Mr Williams, who works for Robert Oulsnam & Company, said: "Although just a small charity, SPEAR is run with a huge amount of love and devotion to the well being of animals that haven't had the best start in life.

"I hope that as well as raising money, we can help pave the way for greater awareness of animals' needs. The cruelty to them must stop."
