WET weather did not deter keen Redditch runners at the weekend for the town's third annual fun run and 10k race.

Organised by retired policeman Dave Wilkins, Saturday's event at Arrow Valley Park attracted hoardes of participants.

Mr Wilkins said: "Despite the very wet weather, we managed to attract some 400 for the toddle waddle, nursery short course and 6k fun run events.

"Covered in mud and soaking wet , the participants took part in the true community spirit that these events are all about."

He said the 10k race was up on numbers from last year with 170 people racing and it had attracted runners from all over the country, including Kent, London, Derby and Devon.

Tenacres First School in Winyates entered a large team in the race, including their football team Acres 11 and the pre-school group.

Tenacres' two pupil champions, as well as the school itself, will receive prizes donated by Staples for their efforts.

The event was sponsored by Startins, Sureparts, Staples, McDonalds, Redditch Council and TJ O'Gorman.

Mr Wilkins said he had lots of positive feedback from those taking part about the quality of organisation and marshals.

He added: "I am already starting to try to find sponsorship of £2,000 needed for the 2007 May events but in the meantime, there will be some £1,500 from entry fees this year to distribute between the Primrose Hospice, Carers Careline, What's Your Point? and Radio Pulse."

He said anyone who wanted to sponsor next year's events should contact him at acevents@yahoo.co.uk and he also wants to hear from anyone who raised sponsorship for their own chosen charity or organisation.

Six-year-old Kieron Holt, who completed the race in his wheelchair, raised £135 for Whizz Kids.

Mr Wilkins said: "He was the only wheelchair participant this year - a real credit and what it is all about - everyone of every ability can participate so let's see a lot more of you next year taking part."
