COMPETITORS in last Sunday's Tewkesbury Sprint Triathlon were pleased the event didn't start until 4pm because by then the almost constant rain which fell last weekend had all but finished!

Although the roads and paths were still wet it made for a much more enjoyable race for all concerned.

Worcester Triathlon Club celebrated victory once again this year in the event but this time it was 17-year-old Daniel Keen from Evesham who beat all the senior athletes to win the overall race in a time of 59 minutes and 46 seconds.

The teenager enjoyed a winning margin of 33 seconds over his closest rival, Andrew Shipton from Stroud Athletic Club.

Keen produced excellent times in the 400m swim in Cascades Pool and on the 22K bike section but saved the best until last when he tore round the 5K run course in an absolutely phenomenal time of 14 minutes and 32 seconds.

This was the fastest run time of the day by almost a minute.

Keen will take confidence from his first senior triathlon victory into his next race scheduled for the June 11 at Windsor.

Also competing from Worcester Tri Club were Johnny Stephens who finished well up in fifth position in a time of 1.01.59 in his comeback season.

James Browning was 24th in 1.11.20 and Ken Barber 29th in 1.12.57 for second in the male super vet category.

The ladies race was won by Rachel Hobbs of 5S Training in a time of 1.09.31 - 17 th position overall).

Marianne Day from Worcester Tri Club finished seventh overall in the ladies race in a time of 1.16.41 and fellow club members Monica Hardwick finished 15th (1.22.20) making her second female super vet on the day.
