A FORMER MP for Droitwich Spa has died in hospital after a long battle with cancer.

Eric Forth, aged 61, served as a trade and education minister when the Tories were last in power and has been described as "one of the greatest parliamentarians of his generation".

Known for his trademark colourful ties and waistcoats, Mr Forth was famous for using intricate parliamentary procedures to thwart government plans while he was in opposition.

He became the Spa's representative in parliament after he was elected as MP for Mid-Worcestershire in 1983. He represented the town until 1997.

Following his death current Mid-Worcestershire MP Peter Luff has paid tribute to him.

Peter, who contested the nomination for the new Mid-Worcestershire seat with Eric ahead of the 1997 boundary changes, said: "Eric and I enjoyed a surprisingly close relationship, despite the difficulties caused by that contest.

"Eric cultivated a controversial and hard-hitting image, but he was delightful company, always outspoken, but also thoughtful and challenging. No one knew parliamentary procedure better than Eric and he used it to devastating effect.

"I have met many of his former constituents in the Droitwich area who have the most grateful memories of his work on their behalf."
