A SHOPPER got the shock of his life when he found a live maggot at the bottom of a bag of bread.
Bruce Bishop, aged 28, was one of four people to make complaints to environmental health officials after making the disgusting discovery as he took the last slice in the bag to make a sandwich.
Mr Bishop, who lives with his partner and her children in Drakes Avenue, Dines Green, Worcester, said: "It was a shocking discovery."
Mr Bishop, originally from Hereford, returned to the
Co-op store in Gresham Road, Dines Green, where he bought the bread, and said when he arrived he saw staff sweeping up other maggots.
He said: "I only found the one maggot but that was enough to make me go down to the Co-op, where the bread was bought.
"It was just disgusting. I saw all these maggots on the floor.
"The maggot must have got into my bread through the hole in the bottom of the bag.
"At first we thought there were maggots in the house, but I'm happier in the knowledge they came from the shop."
Anita Fletcher, principal officer for the environmental health department at Worcester City Council, said: "We have received four complaints. I have had an officer go to the store. At the moment, the investigation is continuing."
A spokeswoman for the Co-operative Group said: "There is no infestation at the Dines Green Co-op store, which can be confirmed by the local authority's environmental health department. We understand there was a complaint to the environmental health department whose representatives visited the store and they have confirmed there is not a health risk nor an infestation."
