A POOR turnout at Monday night's Save the Alex protest has led campaign organisers to believe residents think their health services are safe.

However, campaign leader Neal Stote said some of the Redditch's key services including A&E, maternity and gynaecology departments are still very much at risk.

He held a protest event outside Redditch Town Hall in Walter Stranz Square prior to the start of the local authority's Annual General Meeting, however only a handful of residents turned out.

"I am rather concerned people in the town think our health services are safe, when they are still very much in jeopardy."

He says he is waiting for an update from Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust regarding the future of services at the Woodrow site.

"It has gone very quiet on their part and people really need to know what is going on," said the Greenlands dad.

"Last November they spoke with such urgency of the need to save more than £20 million but now, six months on, we still do not know what is happening."

Mr Stote said he was also waiting to hear from Jacqui Smith MP regarding her correspondence with the Government's Health Select Committee.

He asked her to write to the committee asking for it to look into the finances of the cash-strapped Worcestershire trust.

Last week the Advertiser incorrectly stated the demonstration was taking place last night. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused.
