A WOMAN from Worcester is in line for a national award after being recognised for her outstanding contribution to the children in her charge.

Chris Hale, of Viewfields, Newtown, Worcester, has been shortlisted from hundreds of nominations for an Excellence in Play Award, due to her committed and tireless contribution to the children she looks after at Droitwich Spa Nursery and Kindergarten.

The Pre-School Learning Alliance, in association with Fisher-Price, has been scouring the country since January in search of everyday people who spend their time bringing laughter and play to the lives of children. Mrs Hale instantly caught the eye of the judges, and as a result of her hard work, is down to the final few entries.

The 56-year-old said: "I feel so privileged to have been shortlisted. I really didn't expect it, but I really am so happy - it's fantastic. It would be wonderful if we won, since we could use the money to get the children some new toys and buy them a new hut for the nursery."

Steve Alexander, chief executive of the Pre-School Learning Alliance, said: "We know from our own experiences that play makes a real difference in children's lives."

"Great learning through play activities are being carried out every day all over the UK in early years groups, with childminders and in the home with parents. We want to recognise and support these achievements, promoting the importance of play for every child."

The overall winner will attend an awards ceremony in London, June 15, and will receive a cash prize and lots of toys for the children.
