BROADWAY achieved two excellent away victories at Droitwich Spa in the EBA Top Club competition and then at Gilt Edge in the Vernon Turner Cup.

In what was always going to be a difficult fixture, they travelled to old rivals Spa last Friday when Phil Taylor did the business in the Two-Wood Sin-gles beating Neville Collins 13-9.

Droitwich, though, levelled in the Four-Wood Singles when Richard Moule overcame John Oliver 21-8 in a much closer game than the final score might suggest.

The Triples went the way of the hosts as Andy Sparkes got the better of Mark Rainbow but Paul Speake was always in command against Ron Ashby so all eyes turned to the Pairs where Dennis and Richard Hall were battling it out with Hugh Lammas and Phil Moule.

After 15 ends the Halls were 17-8 ahead but Droitwich fought back to be only three shots adrift going into the 20th end.

A couple of excellent opening woods from Dennis Hall and good positional ones from Richard meant Broadway went into the last end five up and, despite dropping a shot on the last, progress was sealed by three games to two.

Scores - Two-Wood Singles: P Taylor bt N Collins 13-9. Four-Wood Singles: R J Oliver lost to R Moule 21-8. Pairs: D & R Hall bt H Lammas & P Moule 20-16. Broadway then faced the equally daunting task of travelling to Gilt Edge in Kidderm-inster on Sunday.

In what was always a close game, the visitors showed true grit and determination to stay in the game when, after 12 ends, they found themselves ten shots behind.

However, eight shots in two ends from Colin Cooper's rink and a magical wood from Mark Rainbow that turned a three-shot deficit into a five-shot gain, took the wind out of Gilt Edge's sails and Broadway started to forge ahead.

Phil Taylor finished all-square after having been 13-7 down, Colin Cooper ran out an easy 25-17 winner, while Rainbow also won comfortably 24-17.

In a Concorde League game at Pershore the previous day, Broadway's unbeaten start to the campaign came to an end as the hosts ran out 100-76 victors winning on three of the five rinks.

Ray Griffiths and Ted Dins-dale put Pershore in a strong position winning by 13 and ten shots against Brian Ford and Phil Taylor respectively. Derek Palfrey won a tight game agai-nst Dennis Hall by four shots.
