ZOE Wenham set the pace at last weekend's National Kart Racing Association's Southern area race meeting at the Rye House track in Essex.

On her first visit to the circuit in her Minimax class kart, the 12-year-old pupil of Bredon Hill Middle School recorded the fastest time of the day on the way to picking up second place.

She also earned the accolade of being the highest placed lady driver and organisers were so impressed with her performance that she was named Driver of the Day across the whole meeting out of more than 120 drivers of all ages from across the south of England.

With just one round of the competition remaining at Andover next month, she has moved into first place in the championship. Even more impressive given that it's only her first season in this class with top speeds of 75mph.

The youngster is racing at the Clay Pigeon Kart Circuit in Dorset this weekend.
