POLICE have reinforced their message of zero tolerance on antisocial behaviour after the weekend's football fever saw two fixed penalty notices issued for boozing in the town.

Sgt Julian Smith, of Redditch police, said: "Last weekend we saw a rise in alcohol-induced antisocial behaviour in the town centre, partly due to the warm weather but also to the increased numbers in the pubs watching the England friendly against Jamaica on Saturday.

"We want people to understand we will not tolerate the unacceptable behaviour of the minority affecting the enjoyment of the majority and we will be taking a firm approach throughout the tournament."

He said two fixed penalty notices were issued following drink-related offences on Saturday and anyone being issued with one for being drunk and disorderly would face an £80 fine and a police record.

"We are looking forward to a safe and enjoyable World Cup for all and we'd like to pass on our thanks to the local licensees for their continued co-operation, particularly in respect to refusing to serve anyone showing signs of drunkenness.

"We will have more officers on patrol on key match dates, providing high visibility and a reassuring presence, particularly in the town centre.

"We hope people will heed these warnings and this year's World Cup is remembered for the right reasons and not because someone has been caught acting in a violent or aggressive manner through drinking too much," added Sgt Smith.
