A Spa-based nurse has hit out at changes in the National Health Service by handing a 1,000 signature petition to town MP Peter Luff.

Hansa Norman, who lives in Primsland Drive, works as a staff nurse at the Worcestershire Royal Hospital in Worcester. She has worked for South Worcestershire Primary Care Trust for the last 25 years.

She is so angry about service cuts and redundancies in the NHS that she asked to see Mr Luff after gaining the support of other nurses and townsfolk by compiling her petition.

Hansa says that in all her years as a nurse she had never seen anything like it before and blamed the Government for how it has handled the situation.

She arranged to meet with Mr Luff at Droitwich Spa's community contact centre in the High Street last Friday to hand over her petition and express her concern at the current situation.

Her efforts are part of a Royal College of Nursing campaign.

In a letter to Mr Luff which accompanied the petition she said: "As a Westminster MP we are urging you to work with our local trust to adopt a long-term recovery plan. Instead of reacting in the short term with service cuts and redundancies, we need a long-term deficits recovery plan."

Spa's MP said: "I have noticed that the most recent problems have been different because more and more health service workers have started to be aware of the problem. After meeting with Mrs Norman I will be sending the petition to Tony Blair and asking for a direct response which I can share with my constituents. I can understand her concerns because a lot of people face an uncertain future."
