Droitwich 68 all out Brockhampton 69-5

Droitwich lost by five wickets

DROITWICH suffered their worst defeat in 20 years as they crumbled to Brockhampton at St Peter's Field in the Worcestershire League Division One on Saturday.

Spa had no answer to Brockhampton bowler Abdur Rauf, who took six wickets for a miserly 23 runs, as the batting order suffered a collapse.

Droitwich's bowlers worked hard to give their side a chance of victory but Adam Hewlett (36) and Henry Langford (15) did enough to guide Brockhampton to a crushing victory.

Senior player Adrian Field admitted the heavy defeat had been a blow to Droitwich.

He said: "That was the most embarrassing result I've experienced in 13 years of playing cricket.

"We didn't fight it out of a bad situation and they had a very good overseas player. He wasn't good enough to bowl us out for 68, though.

"We didn't apply ourselves on a good track where we should have been scoring between 220 and 230 runs. But we didn't play well and picked the wrong shots.

"To be fair Brockhampton held their catches - they're a good side and finished runners-up last season."

Spa lost the toss, were put into bat and suffered calamity straight away when in-form Jerome Connor was bowled by Rauf with the game's third ball.

His replacement at the crease, Damon Garrif, was dismissed by Rauf's first delivery to him - as Spa fell to 0-2.

Alex Kolb (1) did not last long as Alex Parker trapped him lbw, before Josh Staines (12) was Rauf's third victim.

Captain Paul Bryan tried to hit back but he was dismissed by Brockhampton's danger man for 17, as Droitwich fell to a meagre 68.

It was left to Spa's bowlers to try to give their side a chance and Michael Rogers (14-1) dismissed David Mokker (0) but Hewlett (36) put his side on track to victory, before Field dismissed him.

Langford (15) and Johnny Walker (4) then made sure of Spa's defeat as Brockhampton made 69 in the 12th over.

l Droitwich responded strongly on Sunday by defeating Worcester in the county league. Forties for Damon Gariff and Josh Staines steered Spa past Worcester's total of 142.
