FATHER-and-son drag racing team, Brian and Lee Huxley, bagged two trophies at Santa Pod Raceway in Northampton-shire on the bank holiday weekend.

The duo, who were runners-up in the National Trophy last year, also finished second in the recent meeting at the Shakespeare County Raceway, in Stratford-on-Avon, on Sunday, April 30.

At Santa Pod, Worcester-based mechanic Brian, 63, took first place after consistent driving all weekend, having qualified third out of a field of 16 cars. He races a 1966 Ford Mustang Coupe with a 289 Ford five litre V8 engine in the Sportsman's ET Class.

Lee, a 37-year-old builder, just managed to scrape into the field as the 32nd qualifier.

With the field consisting of 44 cars, it was the biggest event he had entered and he needed to win five rounds to eventually lift the trophy.

Lee races in the Pro ET Class with his car Top Banana, which is a 1932 Ford Model B Roadster with a seven-and-a-half litre Ford big block engine that can clock up around 130mph in a little over 10 seconds.

The Huxleys were delighted with the double win, which they believe may be a first for drag racing.

Lee said: "Our sponsors are very important to us and without them it would be impossible for our team to be as competitive as we are.

"The prize money just about covered our entrance fees so my dad and I are very grateful to the sponsors."
