A MAN wearing a black balaclava escaped empty-handed after he tried to snatch a woman's bag at the weekend.

The victim was walking along Holloway Lane towards Studley Road on Saturday at about 7.10pm when she felt someone tugging at her handbag.

She held on to it and the man, wearing a balaclava that covered his head and face with two eyeholes cut out with white stitching around them, let go and ran off towards Stevenson Avenue.

Pc Cal Oliver from Central CID said: "The woman managed to keep hold of her bag and so the offender ran off empty-handed.

"Nevertheless it is important that we identify this offender and we are appealing to anyone who was in this area on Saturday evening and recalls seeing anything that might be connected to the incident to get in touch."
