DAVE Clark has been around Worcester long enough to know an opportunity when he sees one. The councillor and former mayor undoubtedly has a feeling for the rhythm of the Faithful City - and this is why his idea to relocate the Swan Theatre to Lowesmoor should be given serious consideration.

At present, the old vinegar works site has been earmarked as a new home for the Territorial Army. We have the utmost respect for our part-time soldiers, but agree with Councillor Clark when he says that this historic building would be unsuitable for such a use.

In fact, it could be said that the site's potential has been staring us in the face all along. The presence of a vibrant place of entertainment close to the city centre is just what Worcester has needed since what once passed for the city's theatreland saw its final curtain more than a generation ago.

Worcester badly needs more tourism. This cannot come about through shops alone and neither are the charms of our River Severn sufficient to bring in enough visitors and their spending power.

Like Huntingdon Hall, the Swan has become a centre of excellence - but unlike the former, the theatre is essentially located in a Victorian suburb - and this is most certainly not ideal if Worcester is to fulfil its destiny of becoming the cultural hub of the West Midlands.

The Worcester News would now like Dave Clark and Huntingdon Arts boss Chris Jaeger to start talking. Gentlemen, let the show commence.
