SIR - It is eminently sensible for Christopher Whitehead School to stay in St John's. It has always struck me as being very conveniently located for this area. Of course, it is looking a little tired now, like many schools built in the middle years of the 20th Century.
But it is functional and unless a school is not fit for its purpose and cannot be improved, then it should not be replaced. Indeed, reliance on private finance initiatives is key to the school buildings programme currently under way and planned and I hope it isn't adopted for the eventual replacement of the school in the coming years.
We have seen the effect of this in some our hospital finances. In 2003, the Audit Commission expressed concern about schools built by PFI.
We should be very cautious about saddling our education system with debts that may undermine the education of the children in future.
