MEN are being urged to say what is on their minds during the upcoming National Men's Health Week.

With the week, running from Monday until Sunday, June 18, themed "Men and Mental Health", a Wyre Forest health chief has advised males to take more care of their mental wellbeing.

Dr Richard Harling, the district primary care trust's acting director of public health, said: "Men and boys often find it hard to talk about their feelings and can be reluctant to seek or receive professional help for mental health problems from either medical or psychological services.

"Men want to know how they can stay healthy but say they get confused by conflicting health messages. We want to keep it simple by promoting five key steps men can take."

The steps include not smoking, using alcohol and stimulants responsibly and eating healthy food. Exercising for 30 minutes, five times a week, is also recommended, as is talking about issues affecting everyday life.

Among initiatives during the week is an open day at Kidderminster's Edward Parry Centre, on Wednesday, between 10am and 3pm. Information stands representing MIND, the CAB, Wyre Forest Community Housing and other agencies will provide advice.

Kidderminster College is playing its part during the week by raising awareness of men's health with students, through the Student Welfare Service. Kidderminster Hospital's D Block will have a foyer display and information will be available to clients.

On Tuesday, the practice team at Cookley Surgery are hosting a general open day, when men's health will be one of the topics covered.

A reference guide leaflet, highlighting local and national services, has been produced. Copies can be obtained by phoning 01562 826387.
