ROOKIE rowers made a splash in Bewdley as they took to the water for the annual Clubs and Pubs Regatta on Saturday.

More than 100 spectators enjoyed the sunshine while cheering on 23 teams as they raced along the River Severn .

Captain Fantastic and his Merry Men from Cleobury Mortimer Rugby Club were the winners in the men's event after beating 10 other crews.

Annie's Angels, a group of teachers from St Anne's First School, finished first in the women's race after seeing off competition from seven other teams , while Star Oars were the top rowers in the mixed event.

Other crews included teachers from Bewdley High School, staff from Bewdley Medical Centre and workers from the town's Black Boy Hotel.

Each team had four rowers who were all novices, as well as a cox, and competitors ranged in ages from 16 to 50.

They were given training by the town's rowing club, which hosted the event, so they could prepare for the gruelling 450-metre race from the clubhouse to Bewdley Bridge.

Event secretary, Peter Simpson, said the regatta was a success, adding: "We had 16 teams last year so we had an increase in numbers, which was good. It is a very popular event."

Rob Parker, who is the club captain, added: "I think it was enjoyed by everybody and we had great weather, which always helps. It's a good way of introducing more people to rowing."

The event, which has been running for more than 15 years, aims to encourage people to take up the sport and help the club recruit more members.

All the proceeds are ploughed back into the club to help it to purchase equipment to help teach younger members.

The annual Bewdley Regatta will take place on Saturday and Sunday, July 22 and 23.
