POLICE have warned Wyre Forest football fans that a "zero-tolerance" approach to yobs and violent behaviour will be their policy throughout the World Cup tournament.

The tough stance has been adopted after a rise in alcohol-induced anti-social behaviour last weekend, which was put down to the warm weather and the increase of numbers of people in pubs drinking while they watched the national team's friendly fixture against Jamaica on television which England won 6-0.

One fixed penalty notice for a drink-related offence, which carries a possible £80 fine and a police record, was issued in Kidderminster on Saturday.

Sgt Kevin Lane, of Wyre Forest police, said: "We want people to understand we will not tolerate the unacceptable behaviour of the minority affecting the enjoyment of the majority and we will be taking a firm approach throughout the tournament."

It is hoped the drive will reduce the chances of a repeat of the ugly scenes in Kidderminster after the 2002 World Cup victory against Argentina.

Town centre pubs were forced to shut for the night after celebrations turned nasty and trouble flared after the lunchtime kick off.

Sergeant Lane added: "We hope that people will heed these warnings and this year's World Cup is remembered for the right reasons and not because someone has been caught acting in a violent or aggressive manner through drinking too much.

"We will have more officers on patrol on key match dates, providing high visibility and a reassuring presence, particularly in Kidderminster, Bewdley and Stourport town centres."
