SIR - Last year the EU introduced higher taxes on imports of textiles and clothing than the rest of the world.
The World Trade Organisation has calculated that these trade barriers are costing a family of four about £261 a year. Next on the list are shoes, with EU import taxes rising in September. The finance director of a major company has warned that prices for shoes will have to rise by a significant percentage.
Even before this happens, there are demands for increased EU taxes on the import of furniture. IKEA is already warning of the consequences of such action, i.e. price increases.
The British Retail Consortium is starting a petition to send to the EU to explain how much this is costing us. The simplest solution is UKIP's - leave the EU and then we can decide our own import controls.
