THE June meeting began with congratulations to Margaret and Eric Portman on their golden wedding anniversary; other celebrations this month include the signing of Magna Carta in 1215 and in 1917 the Royal Family changing their name to Windsor.

The outing to the Van Gogh exhibition at Compton Verney was enjoyed by all who went.

Peter Dyson informed us of the "Silver Surfers", an Age Concern organisation for older people to learn to send emails and surf the internet.

Many Warwickshire libraries have this facility but not, as yet, Alcester Library and so volunteers were invited.

On June 30 the History Group is visiting the "back to back" houses in Birmingham and the Ambling Group are walking from Broadway a fortnight earlier.

After Derek's monthly poem, this time entitled The Tailor's Tale , Miss L Fairgrieve from Leamington Spa U3A then gave a talk on "The Tailor of Salisbury" describing Geoffrey Hurford's career as a tailor.

He was disabled from birth and in 1938 trained at a college for disabled boys before becoming a "codger", not a bespoke tailor, altering and repairing rather than making. Many celebrities crossed the threshold of his small cottage in Salisbury.
