STAFF at a Rubery leisure centre are celebrating after it received £4,000 from the Awards for All scheme.

The Rubery Leisure and Community Centre, in Holywell Lane, will use the grant to carry out a survey to determine the needs of the community and establish the activities and facilities required to meet them.

It is one of 140 groups to be awarded a share of more than £615,000, which has been handed out to help better the quality of life for people in their areas.

Leisure centre chairman Phil Dent said the grant was excellent news and that he hopes the centre can now expand.

"The money is being spent on a questionnaire which will be distributed to everyone in Rubery to find out how they want us to improve our services," he said.

"We are planning to expand on a bigger scale. We want to get plans that we have had done passed.

"The centre would become a £250,000 to £500,000 building, but it all hinges on what the people of Rubery want," he added.

Awards for All is run by the Big Lottery Fund on behalf of Lottery good cause funders, the Arts Council England, Big Lottery Fund, Heritage Lottery Fund and Sports England. Grants of between £300 and £10,000 are distributed to community groups and voluntary organisations.
