THE headteacher of South Bromsgrove High School is set to say goodbye after nine years, to return to the school he originally came from.

Phil McTague joined the Charford Road school in 1997 from his position as deputy head at Eirias High School in north Wales.

Now, after guiding South Bromsgrove through a string of successes, he is set to return to the top performing Welsh school. During his time at South Mr McTague has seen the school gain 11 national awards and win specialist status in technology and languages, as well as overseeing building developments for a new £25million campus.

Born in Longbridge, Mr McTague left the area at the age of 18 to go to university, before taking up teaching posts in Leicestershire and Wales.

"It was the toughest professional decision I have had to make in my life," he said of the move back to north Wales.

"I've had nine wonderful years here and I have seen the school grow by 30 per cent.

"I've had a great time, with some wonderful students, staff and governors.

"It is a new challenge and it is right for me personally and professionally.

"My wife Lorna is from that area and my children David and Amy are looking forward to it.

"I have many fond memories, but life is all about moving on and taking on new challenges.

"I'm sure the new head Paul Copeland will continue to help South Bromsgrove grow from strength to strength."
