REDDITCH driver Colin Willmott is celebrating after making a succesful debut in the prestigious Britcar European Endurance race around Belgium's Spa circuit.

Willmott, together with teammates Barry Benham and Guy Gerrish, finished an excellent second in class and 11th overall at the end of the gruelling four-hour race.

The Willmott Racing BMW, which was professionally prepared and run by new motorsport outfit TW Competitions, faced fierce competition from a string of top drivers including former British Touring Cars ace David Leslie and World GT driver Hans Stuck.

The crew's BMW E36 M3 qualified third in class and 18th overall and the race began with Willmott driving the first 90 minute section.

It soon became clear that finishing the race was a priority as a number of cars made mistakes or ran into mechanical problems, something which eventually left Willmott's car with just fourth gear.

Gerrish had the honour of steering the car home, nursing it over the line to complete a memorable weekend.

The team are now gearing up for the 24-hour Willhire endurance race to be staged at Silverstone in September.
