PLAYER Jon Andrews has been named the new director of rugby at Droitwich Spa RFC.

Andrews, who has been a stalwart for the side over the last few years, replaces Julian Bailey in the all important role.

The change was made at the club's annual general meeting at the start of June.

Chairman Phil Hopkins said: "Julian did an excellent job in his time here but he is stepping down to concentrate on family commitments.

"Jon is a well known member of the team and his experience will help the club move onwards and upwards."

Bailey enjoyed a tumultuous time at Droitwich, playing a part in the team's promotion winning season to the Midlands Division Three West (South) in the 2002/2003 campaign.

The team even managed to defy the odds to stay up but were finally relegated in the 2004/2005 season.

Bailey was instrumental in building the young side that challenged for promotion for much of last season in the Midlands Division Four South (West).

The club is also closing in on a new head coach before the start of the 2006/2007 season.

Hopkins was also confident that the club's ambitious plans to build a grandstand will take a step forward in the next few weeks.

He said: "Things are in the pipline and it won't take long for them to start happening."
