AN angry group of volunteers have slammed vandals behind a second attack on a Stourport centre for the elderly in three weeks.

Yobs struck again at the Social Day Centre, in New Street, some time between 12.45pm on Saturday and 10am on Monday and caused £500 worth of damage.

Volunteers, who are trying to raise £50,000 to refurbish the popular building, have been left to pick up the pieces after two plastic wall panels were smashed.

More than 500 pensioners visit the centre every week to meet friends, buy meals and take part in a variety of activities.

Muriel Smith, secretary of the day centre's committee, said she found it hard to understand the logic behind the constant "senseless attacks".

The 72-year-old said: "It is getting really disheartening now. We are trying to raise funds all the time but, because of all this, it goes in one hand and out the other.

"It is so important for the people who come here because it gives them the chance to mix with their friends.

"It gives them something to look forward to each week. Why anyone would keep doing this is beyond me."

The latest vandalism follows a similar incident in May when a utility room was broken into, windows smashed and yellow graffiti was sprayed on the building - costing £300 to repair and clean up.

PC Andy Brooks-Davies, of Stourport police, said "We are currently investigating this incident of criminal damage and have further inquiries to complete. However, we would still like the help of the public to provide further information.

"We are treating this as a priority and are aware of the impact that these incidents will be having on those persons who use the Day Care Centre."

Anyone with information about the incidents should call Stourport Police on 08457 444888 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111.
