STOURPORT is set for a makeover to get the most out of its assets and boost its attraction to potential visitors.

A study called Stourport Pride has come up with a series of suggestions to boost the town's economy through the Stourport Forward Market Towns Initiative programme.

Among them is lighting up the town's bridge and landmarks and specifying design guidelines for street furniture and landscaping.

Members of Wyre Forest District Council's prosperity policy panel, meeting last night, were due to be given an update on the project.

The district council secured £15,000 from Stourport Forward to part fund the work of consultants, Taylor Young, in examining ways to improve Stourport's image.

Research by the consultants included seeing what scope there was to improve the riverside environment, gateways to the town, its central streets and canal basins.

The study was intended to provide a "comprehensive and themed approach" to the design of public spaces throughout Stourport, according to district council economic regeneration officer, Delia Yapp, who prepared the update report for last night's meeting.

Distinctive areas of the town highlighted were Gilgal, the town centre, Riverside and Central Basins.

As preparation of the Stourport Pride survey document had only involved limited consultation with interested parties, it was proposed that wider public consultation should take place.

Formulating a lighting strategy could enable the town to show off its bridge and landmarks to better effect, the report suggested.

District councillors were last night being asked to support the council teaming up with Stourport Forward to carry out public consultation on the draft document for the makeover proposals, with venues suggested including the Stourport Farmers' Market, Stourport Library and the Civic Centre.

Public consultation will be held between July 13 and August 25.
