BACK in March, South Africa stunned the cricket world by scoring a record 438-9 to win their one-day international against Australia, who had just smashed the previous best ever score by making 434-4 in their innings.

On Saturday, Himbleton and Colwall produced a Crusader Worcestershire League version of this game.

Himbleton recorded a nine-wicket win over Colwall that no-one would have predicted at the half-way stage of the division three south game to scoop our team of the week award.

Batting first, Colwall posted an impressive 301-6 declared, thanks to Tom Wolfendale's unbeaten 159. But when the Colwall captain declared, he would have had no idea of the batting onslaught that was to come.

Himbleton's openers Andy Howorth and Dean Oliver rose to the challenge superbly, smashing the Colwall bowlers to all corners. The home side reached a winning total of 302 for the loss of just one wicket, with Howorth cracking 146 and Oliver ending un-beaten on 119.

Oliver said: "I heard their batsmen saying they wanted to get to 300 as quickly as they could and declare so they could have the extra overs to bowl us out.

"They came off the pitch quite buoyant as you would expect, but when Andy and I went out, we knew it was a good batting track so we thought we'd give it a go.

"We put on 283 for the first wicket, which we believe is a club record. They just seemed to bowl in our areas."

Colwall win a box of six Fearnley cricket balls, valued at £90.
