AUSTIN Powers made a dramatic entrance at Evesham's Six in One Festival on Saturday as he sped into the event in a classic e-type convertible Jaguar.

Unfortunately, the international man of mystery could not hang around for long as Dr Evil was hot on his heels.

Austin made a break for it, dashing into a speedboat and heading across the river leaving his archenemy on the banks.

Dr Evil finally caught up with Austin, who by this time was swigging Champagne with the Carnival Queen Samantha Edwards and downing a special love potion. Austin swiftly jumped into a hot air balloon with the Carnival Queen and set off to save the world leaving Dr Evil on dry land.

The act, organised by Evesham Round Table, was to promote this year's carnival on Saturday, July 1.

During the rest of the day, visitors enjoyed a glorious day of sunshine at the event, which was held at Evesham's Showground in Abbey Park, Crown Meadow and Workman Gardens.

The event featured all the usual entertainment and activities including giant air balloons soaring through the sky, Danters funfair with giant slides for the children, live music and fireworks.

A widescreen TV and beer tent, organised by Colin Badham of the Royal Oak pub, ensured that football fans didn't miss out on England's win against Paraguay and chairman of the Vale 100 Action Group, Mike Flanders, provided the sound for the day and organised the talent shows.

Evesham Sailing Club gave demonstrations throughout the day and offered trips on the river and the Sporting Bears Motor Club zoomed in with a number of classic cars and sports cars for people to view, and some to have a ride in, in Workman Gardens and on Crown Meadow.

Lew Hammond, market town partnership manager, said: "The whole thing went brilliantly well, particularly in the evening.

"We had a 42-inch plasma screen in Abbey Park in the afternoon, with a beer tent, but the crowds during the day were significantly down on previous years, which was disappointing although understandable.

"Things really picked up in the evening though and we had thousands of people there. I would estimate about 4,000 turned up for that, making it the most successful festival to date. The weather was a great help throughout the day and everyone who did come had a great time."
