HEALTH awareness was highlighted during a series of events in Cookley this week.

Patients were invited to find out more about the current trends and treatments for diabetes at Cookley Medical Centre on Tuesday.

Dawn Edwards, the diabetic specialist nurse, was on hand to offer support and advice.

The healthy lifestyle theme was continued at Seabright First School the same day, where health visitor, Tina McKensie, and the school nurse were available to discuss parents' concerns.

The event focused on an active lifestyle and promoted foods with a low GI index, which help to sustain energy levels, and the importance of fruit and vegetables.

Spokeswoman for the event, Lisa Benton, said: "We feel that this is a perfect time to bring this message home to children and parents alike, especially in light of Secretary of State for Health Patricia Hewitt's latest controversial initiative, which means that all children are to be weighed at the age of four and 10 to screen for obesity."
