WORCESTER light welterweight Sean Smith beat Tony Philips of Queensbury ABC at a recent show in Stoke.

The straight-punching Smith scored well during the opening round against a nervous Philips, racking up the points to a comfortable lead.

With Smith content to pick up points using his jab, the second round was a quiet affair, with periods of inactivity. The third saw Smith use his right hands more against the less experienced Queensbury boxer.

Smith needs to maintain the pressure throughout the bout and put the decision beyond question, especially against a fighter who clearly did not want to commit himself in fear of taking punishment.

Lightweight Kofil Ahmed lost on points to Nas Rafio, also of Queensbury.

Ahmed took the bout at short notice and knew he needed to battle hard against the more experienced Rafio.

The movement and fast hand speed of Rafio, saw Ahmed take punches trying to get inside his man. A little frustration crept into Ahmed work during the latter stages of the bout, as he tried in vain to close him down.

Rafio was awarded the contest on a unanimous decision, but Ahmed should be pleased with his performance.

Light middleweight Darren Davies faced Ricky Pickerill of Queensbury in a hard fought contest. A fairly even first round saw the two boxers battling hard with both fists, setting the pace for the contest.

The third saw Davies come back into the fight, but he left it a bit late and Pickerill won on a narrow points margin.
