RESIDENTS of Malvern's Jamaica Road area are being urged to put pen to paper and save a field.

The town council has submitted a planning application to change the use of the field off Greenfields Road to allotments.

This has not gone down well with locals, who cherish the open space for dog-walking and children's play.

A petition opposing the move was sent to the town council. Resident Les Wiggett, who started the petition, plans to attend a town council meeting on Tuesday to put forward residents' views. He has visited all the homes in Jamaica Road and Greenfield Road, urging people to write to the council opposing the plan.

"The more letters they get, the more difference it will make," he said.

He will also be sending a copy of his petition to district council planners.

The town council wants to use the field for allotments as part of a longer-term strategy to replace allotments at Madresfield Road. The Madresfield allotments will have to move to allow the town cemetery to expand.
