A group of friends who met at Malvern's hydrotherapy pool are setting off on the adventure holiday of a lifetime.

Named The Adventurers, the foursome, who are all disabled, are tackling an outdoor activity holiday in the Lake District.

The group has been fundraising since last year and has just received a £250 grant from Malvern Hills Lions Club to help with transport costs.

"The grant is fantastic, it will help hire a minibus or pay for fuel," said trip organiser Michele Argent.

The group were inspired by a TV programme about a disabled man tackling a mountain climb. When Michele heard the only thing stopping them doing something similar was money, the fundraising started.

Michele was using Osborne Court hydro pool's Aquafit sessions following a hip replacement and encouraged the disabled group and their carers to plan their adventure holiday.

"The group were a real inspiration to me when I was recovering from my hip operation," she said. "They don't let their disability deter them from anything."

Children at Malvern Parish Primary school raised £600 towards The Adventurers' trip after members spoke to them about disability and how disabled people have the same aspirations as the physically able.

Four carers will accompany them to the Calvert Trust Activity Centre near Keswick in September, where the group will have the opportunity to try out adventurous activities like paragliding and abseiling.

Other groups awarded money from the Malvern Hills Lions Club grant scheme, in association with the Malvern Gazette & Ledbury Reporter, include 1st Malvern Wells Scouts (£250), Malvern M V Choir (£150), The Madison Trust (£150), Home-Start (£100), Castlemorton Playgroup (£120), Ledbury Luncheon Club (£100), Bright Sparks (£100) and PlaySpace (£100).

A new Lions Club grants scheme will begin in the autumn.
