THE new ward councillor for Wootton Wawen and Henley has spoken to the Chronicle about his hopes to continue the good work of his predecessor.

Laurence Marshall (pictured) took over the post at the beginning of May after Ann Haddon had to stand down due to failing health.

This is Mr Marshall's first experience as a district councillor, although he had sat on the parish council for some time.

"Ann did such a sterling job in the area that I'm just going to be picking up on the work that she has been doing," he said.

Mr Marshall, who lives in Henley, added he was also keen to devote a fair amount of his time to Wootton Wawen.

Key concerns he wants to address include community policing, combating antisocal behaviour in the area and campaigning to keep a village post office.

He has already written to the Home Office regarding policing.

Mr Marshall said: "From knocking on people's doors we have found that older people are fearful of walking down their own street and being intimidated by gangs of youths. This needs to be addressed."

He added he would also be writing to MP John Maples to make him aware of the Post Office situation and how much people relied on the great service it provides.
