A GROUP of Redditch YMCA residents have been practicing their diplomacy in a special course.

Philip May, Tamuka Chakanasta, Kelly Rowland, and Chris Checkley, who live in YMCA accommodation in Church Hill, attended a course in London to teach them campaigning and lobbying skills.

The course, called Changing Your World, aims to help young people become advocates and agents for change on issues that concern them.

It was led by Lord Rupert Redesdale and Kelly Drake and focussed on gathering ideas and facts, creating and building an effective team.

It also involved designing well-written press releases and developing flyers to mount a campaign.

Sponsored by Y Care International, the international arm of the YMCA, the course included a visit to the Houses of Parliament.

Redditch YMCA support worker Tony Randall said it had been a fantastic opportunity for the residents.

He added: "Many young people today find it difficult to get their point of view across because they lack the communication and organisational skills.

"Their views are often dismissed by adults out of hand.

"These young people are now equipped with a toolkit of knowledge and skills to help them bring their issues successfully to the general public and beyond."
