THE second Shakespeare Championship qualifier on the Warwickshire Avon at Evesham Town Waters and Hampton Ferry was once again dominated by the deep water pegs in the Cafe Meadow below the Ferry.

Current champion Charlie Hague fancied his chances when he pulled out peg 66 - the third swim below the ferry - and he went for an all-out assault with an open end swimfeeder with groundbait, casters and chopped worm.

The tactic worked as a 5lb fish took his worm hook bait on the very first cast! Two more followed, together with a few eels for a 12lb 9oz total.

Two swims below, Tony Bench was left ruing a couple of lost fish at the final whistle but his 12lb 1oz weight of bream and eels was still good enough for second place.

Peg one on the Town threw up the third place weight for Steve Toone (8.12.0).

The Nottingham angler managed to snare a good tench close in on worm and then switched tactics to top up his catch with roach taken on a light pole rig and hempseed at 13 metres.

Other weights: 4 Jeff Spiers 7-10-0 (peg 65); 5 John Curtis 6-9-0 (51); 6 John Bates 6-4-0 (32).

The three qualifiers for the August 26th final from the 55 anglers competing were Spiers, Dave Harpin and John Bates and Jeff Spiers.
