BECKY Holmes grabbed gold for Samurai at the Midlands Open Junior Championships - before helping the Midlands to medal glory at a national tournament.

There was no stopping the 16-year-old as she won all four of her contests, displaying impressive groundwork, to romp home in the under-63 kilo category.

Also at the Midlands Open, Ryan Pitcock settled for silver in the under-60 kilo category, while Alex Widdowson sealed silver in the girls under-40 kilos.

There were bronzes for Ben Newbury, Amy Millington, David Hadley and Simon Cooper with Bewdley Judo Club's Jessica and David Sullivan putting in good efforts.

Holmes and Samurai clubmate Kelly Edwards - were members of the Midlands senior women's team that achieved bronze at the British Team Championships.

The girls team had a strong and successful Samurai contingent, securing silver thanks to Emily Watson, Edwards, Sarah Biles and Katherine Lloyd Jones.

Kate Walker did her chances of being selected for the World Junior Championships no harm when she joined the British team at the French under-20 years Open Tourn-ament.

Although the team returned without a medal, Walker gave the German number one and eventual bronze medallist a run for her money.

In a training camp, Walker was the only player to take a score off the gold medallist, which was noted with pleasure by the British selectors.
