AN estimated 10,000 people flocked to Kidderminster Carnival, drawn by the spectacle on offer and warm and pleasant weather.

The carnival field, in Brinton Park, was the venue for scores of stalls and entertainment ranging from belly dancers to Flip the Clown.

There was plenty to amuse all ages, with a fairground, cresta run, bouncy castle, quad bikes and penalty shoot-out, as well as donkey rides for the youngsters.

The carnival parade was led by this year's queen, Page-Leanne Price, with princess, Sophia De Beer and rosebuds, Jaimee Jones and Hollie Rawlings. They were accompanied by special guest, Christin Lohrenz, crocus queen of Kidderminster's German twin town, Husum.

Although one man was arrested for disorderly behaviour in Brinton Park, police praised carnival goers. PC Clive Llewellyn said: "The carnival was very well attended, with the procession having good support along the route into Brinton Park.

"The vast majority of the public were well behaved and appeared to enjoy the day." The man arrested will appear before Kidderminster magistrates on Friday, July 7.

Prizewinners in the carnival parade were: pedestrian child: Emily Lane, 10, of Wolverhampton Road, Kidderminster in animal costume. Pedestrian adult: Jacqui Oliver, Bewdley Hill, Kidderminster, as a belly dancer.

Trolley float: Jodie Davies, of Wassell Drive, Bewdley, for Narnia, The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. Vintage car: Ian Robinson, Chaddesley Road, Kidder-minster, with 1934 Lagonda. Best pub/club: Taekwondo Association of Great Britain. Best youth: Broadwaters Rainbows. Best commercial: Kidderminster Harriers, World Cup. Best charity: KD9 Spennells Scout Group.

The street collection raised £1,030. The total amount of money raised for the carnival's chosen charities will be announced later.

The main recipient this year will be Acorns Children's Hospice in Worcester, with donations also going to Wyre Forest Nightstop, which helps homeless young people, and the district's Cancer Research UK committee.

In the programme prize draw, first prize of £75 went to number 2001, while second was number 1282, earning £25. To claim, ring carnival chairman, Colin Hill, on 01562 751634.
