BANDS from all over the world, blazing sunshine and a town packed with thousands of visitors meant Upton Jazz Festival went with a swing.

Organiser 'Sir' Alan Buckley described the 21st annual event as "absolutely fantastic" and promised it would be back next year.

More than 50 bands performed in marquees on Fish Meadow and venues around town during the three-day festival. They included Indian drummers Azaad Dhol Group, who led Saturday morning's jazz parade dressed in traditional costume.

"That was spectacular and really shook the audience," said Sir Alan, adding that most jazz rhythms originated from Indian and African music.

Star attraction on Saturday night was George Melly, who treated a capacity crowd to his special brand of bawdy blues.

Other acts new to the festival included the Big Chris Barber Band and the Bourbon Street Stompers, from Germany, who were on their first visit to England. Sir Alan said the German band were amazed at how organised the festival was, compared to similar events in Europe.

"We always want to improve, we're never satisfied, that's why Upton is a success," he said.

Meanwhile, the town's shops and pub did a roaring trade as festival-goers got in the party mood.

n Winner of the competition for the best dressed shop window with a jazz theme was Pepperpot Flowers, with PS Presents the runner-up.
